UNIVERSITY CONNECT::REVIEWING THE ART OF WAR BY SUN-TSU

  • The Art of War is a book that teaches the way of war and politics in a very short and understandable manner. Despite this, anyone who carefully studies this book may find themselves discovering new ways to interpret Sun Tzu’s work; be it for war or for any other topics, such as economics or business management, to name a couple.

The reason this military-aimed text can be applied to other areas is because, if the reader cares to study it, The Art of War does not solely teaches War per se, but instead, it tries to teach about the doctrine and the logic that a person (general/commander) should follow in the face of a difficult situation.

Without getting too lost in the basics; The Art of War basically teaches how to judge your own position against the enemy’s, it teaches that battles can be won without fighting and it prioritizes the utilization of available resources, be it soldiers or materials.

Above The Art of War, there exists a select few military theory books that cover areas better than Sun Tzu’s work, but there is one book that is considered to be above The Art of War in every aspect. Vom Kriege (‘’On War’’) is a book written by Carl von Clausewitz and posthumously published by his wife.

Thanks to this book (and along with it), Clausewitz is considered as the most important writer and theorist in the modern world when it comes to warfare.
He focuses on teaching the fundamentals of war through the human mind and its experience with the outside world (i.e. the psychological aspect of war), e.t.c…

Anyways… The opinion that Clausewitz had on The Art of War was that it indeed was an important tool for strategic thinking and resource management, but it was not a literary work that focused on war, and therefor, it was overrated when it came in its modern importance in warfare.

I think that The Art of War is not overrated in any aspect, as it has been the cornerstone of the foundations for the strategic development of war all over the world. It can be applied to a plethora of topics if its read with deep thought and understanding, as well as it can provide great advice for the readers.
