You have to work problems to understand physics. There is no shortcut and just reading or listening and thinking you understand will not give you real understanding.

Physics is applied math, and just like in math classes you work a lot of problems, you will only learn physics by working a lot of problems.

They are not like arithmetic problems where you do a lot of repetition. There are many different problems in a few basic types in high school physics.

Work as many of the problems in the book as possible.

Work in a study group if you can. Bouncing ideas off each other is good, but dont just copy someone else's answers.

Cover up the solutions to the examples and try to solve them again.

There are many sets of problems online. Also problem books like the schaums outlines are good. The topics in algebra based physics courses are very standardized. Any book will give you plenty of examples. There may be a small amount of variation in the notation, but it should be accessible.

Create your own study sheet of equations. You really shouldnt need more than a piece of paper written on both sides for each term.

    Do problems every day.

If you wait until just before the tests, you will not have time to learn it.

Brainstorm how you can solve each equation for different things. Also how you can find a solution by putting together multiple equations.

    Note when each equation applies.

As a guideline, when i taught or took physics classes, there were 15 to 20 problems assigned per chapter. This is for someone who already understands how to how to extend the concepts to new types of problems. Someone who is struggling will need to do 3 or 4 times as many problems .

For every example in the book or in class, do another one like it to make sure you really understand it, then find other problems that are different.
