This is why Putin has just put Russia's deterrent nuclear forces on alert.

Personally (and this is far from my field of expertise), I think it means that Putin wanted to make a big thing by announcing something he has already done some time ago. I mean, seriously? With all the build-up leading to this war between Russia, Ukraine and Nato members, it's only just occurred to him to put them on alert now? Days after it all started? Unless he is completely brain dead, that should have been something he'd already done before he ordered his military to launch a “Surprise” invasion.

No doubt NATO is fully aware that this would happen and has been preparing in kind for such a situation. All that says to me is that Putin is trying to panic the watching public (and impress his fans) with scary words. The fact of the matter is, that while Russia does indeed have a lot of Nuclear weapons, they still are only in 2nd place for the title, and starting a Nuclear war pretty much guarantees that Russia will be just as screwed (if not moreso) as everyone else. Is the annexation of Ukraine into Russia really worth the destruction of Russia? If his answer is “Yes”, those around him need to reconsider whether it's worthwhile listening to his orders to start World War III, or whether Russia might be better off if he were kicked out of the front door of the Kremlin and the locks changed.

Representatives from Russia and Ukraine are set to meet and negotiate. I think Putin moving his forces to high alert is a show of power prior to these meetings. He wants to intimidate, just as he had hoped his troops at the border would be enough to do that, but they were not and thus he decided to use them in an invasion. What Putin wants, to be clear, seems to be one central thing: a removal of the current Ukrainian government and to replace it with one of his choosing. He wants a puppet president in Kyiv and probably will offer if Zelensky and his ministers will leave and go into exile, Putin will install some Ukrainian-born politician sympathetic to Moscow instead. Then fighting will stop. It’s not a novel tactic in such situations, it’s been tried and often been successful for centuries and is far easier logistically than to occupy an invaded territory forever. The nuclear weapons are just being used to intimidate and underscore how direly Putin views this situation.
