Kenya 🇰🇪 has strengthened its air defence capabilities after acquiring an advanced Israeli 🇮🇱 counter-drone and missile defence system.
The system, known as SPYDER (Surface-to-air Python and Derby), is designed to detect, track, and intercept drones, aircraft, helicopters, and low-flying missiles.
Mobile and fast-reacting, it is well suited to addressing modern threats, particularly the growing use of drones.
The purchase underscores deepening security cooperation between Kenya and Israel and forms part of Nairobi’s wider push to modernize the Kenya Defence Forces.
Officials say the system will significantly improve airspace protection and counter-terrorism capacity amid evolving regional security challenges.
With this acquisition, Kenya joins a small number of African countries operating advanced air defence systems, reinforcing its role as a key security actor in East Africa.
